The Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion – Key information.

Who can make their Reconciliation and Communion?

Children make the sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion in year 4 (aged 8/9).

Parents are given the opportunity to sign up for the sessions through St George’s school. Children who are older or attend a different school should contact the Church office for registration information, please use the contact form below.

All children attending the sessions need to be baptised – baptism certificates will need to be seen in the first session or on record in school.

What happens during the sessions?

Children and their adult will attend a total of 6 sessions over the year. These will be the 3rd Sunday of each month. Sessions start with Mass at 9.00 where the children will be welcomed to church, be able to participate in Children’s liturgy and experience Mass. Taking part in the Mass helps the children to get a deeper understanding of what they are undertaking and will give them the confidence to continue being active participants in the Parish.

Catechists will then take the children and adults in a session focused on deepening their understanding of the sacraments. These sessions may take place in church or in the Parish Centre and will last approximately 1 hour. Adults are encouraged to work through the booklets with their child. Catechists will be using the Archdiocese scheme ‘With you always’.

Reconciliation

The first 3 With you always sessions will be helping the children to work toward their Reconciliation. These will focus on their baptism, promises made in baptism and their names – being called to the church. They will then be encouraged to think about ways they may not have behaved in the best way and how they can say sorry and be reconciled with God through Reconciliation.

Children will then celebrate their Reconciliation during an evening celebration in January.

First Holy Communion

The remaining sessions will then be focused on understanding the Eucharist and what it means to make their First Holy Communion.

Communion celebrations will take place on a Saturday in May – dates to be confirmed depending on numbers.
